[Trip] Switzerland – 2 Day 1 Night in Zermatt

Zermatt is a car-free village which is surrounded by mountains. We spent 2 day 1 night in Zermatt in October. We only got to visit one of the famous mountains due to our short stay there.

When we purchased the ticket, the staff told us for the next few days the weather will not be good and on that day the Gornergrat station was closed. They advised us to try the first train the next morning.

Luckily the next morning, the weather was good enough for us to to board the train.

Windy and gloomy day at Gornergrat station.

We walked over to the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat hotel which is 3,100m above the sea level with the perfect view of the Matterhorn.

Kapelle Gornergrat

Next stop, Rotenboden, the famous or iconic Instagram photo where you can head over to the Riffelsee Lake and take the photo of the Matterhorn’s mirror image. Sadly, we did not have the chance to see the Matterhorn on that day.

As the path getting down to the Riffelsee Lake was wet and slippery due to the rain and mist. I decided to walk behind the hill to have a full view of the lake.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Europe highest mountain station at the height of 3,883 metres above sea level. The lift will bring you up to the peak to a 360º viewing platform.

Zermatt Village

Walking around the village is also a good way to explore the place.

Duration:

1-2 hours

Marmot fountain

The magnificent Matterhorn was covered by the thick clouds and we were only able to see the Picco Muzio the minor summit below the Matterhorn on the Furggen ridge.

Overall:

We did enjoy our stay in Zermatt but was a little disappointed that we were unable to see the Matterhorn, and go up to the Matterhorn Paradise Glacier. The little town is a good place to rest and stroll around, as most of the places are accessible via foot. As the period we went is the off-peak season, October, this is because the weather can be unpredictable during this time. For instance, during your 10 days in Switzerland the chances of having good weather only happens for few days, however, the pros about it is that most of the places will have lesser crowd, and the hotel stay is at a cheaper rate.

If seeing the Matterhorn is in your wishlist, I would suggest that you plan a few days stay here so that you will have a higher chance of seeing it, and/or to visit during the peak season like End-Jun to Aug or End-Nov to Apr.
