2 cents opinion:

Connection and speed of FarEasTone were good in Taipei city and all. And it is the cheapest option among the other telecommunication service there, for its 7 days plan.

However, when we went to Taichung I couldn’t connect to the internet, as the place we stayed was covered by Chunghwa mobile. In the end, I have to use my travel partner mobile as a hotspot or to walk out of the lodge to use the internet, which was too ridiculous.

If you are to planning to go out of the city area Chunghwa mobile is a good choice, as it is widely used in Taiwan.

2 cents opinion:

The connection is the second-best in Taiwan, and it doesn’t really matter if you get this or Chunghwa as their price are the same. See which queue is shorter and get your sim card.

The counter that you can get the T- Star prepaid sim card is now easier to find, it is at Level one upon arrival. It is at a different area from the rest of the telecommunication service counter. Once exit from the arrival hall turn to your right where you will see the bus to city sign.

Suggestion:

It doesn’t really matter which service provider you choose if you were in Taipei, queue at the shortest line will do. However, if you are planning to go out of Taipei or other urban cities I would suggest you get the Chunghwa prepaid sim card as it is more well covered in Taiwan.

Tips:

Get your prepaid sim card at the airport as it is cheaper and have more plan than the stores outside. If your flight reached later than the operating hours, you will have to get it at the store in the city area, otherwise, visit the convenience store located in the airport.

Here are the Store locations:

Taiwan Mobile

Chunghwa Mobile

Far EasTone

T-star

hi, i will arrive in taoyuan airport around 130AM. where else can i buy prepaid sim card as all counters is close by that time?

    1. gojiakhong

      hello Jepay,

      Thank you for your message.
You can visit the 7-11 store at Taoyuan Airport Terminal 2, B2, which is operating 24 hours. To purchase the ibon prepaid sim card.
You can visit their website to know more: http://www.7-11.com.tw/ibonmobile/english1_1.html

Otherwise, you will have to go down to the respective telecommunication service provider store in the city.

      Hope this answer your question.

      1. Jepay

thank you for the prompt response.

I’ll be arriving at terminal 1. is there a 711 there?

          1. gojiakhong

            Hello Vida,

            Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, there is no 7-11 store in Terminal 1.

            Hope this information helps you.

  2. Van

I will fly in from USA to terminal2, do I have to reserve the SIM card in advance, or I can just go to the telecom service?

    1. gojiakhong

      Hello, van.

      Thank you for your message.

I would advice that if you are reaching late at night around 8-9pm, it would be better to purchase the prepaid SIM card online and collect it at the airport.

Otherwise, you can go to any one of the telecommunication counter to purchase the SIM card.

      Hope this answer your question.

Chungwha also sells a prepaid SIM called “WeChat GO” at the airport. It costs 250 NTD and includes 1,205 GB (205 MB is a bonus) of 4G Internet and 100 NTD airtime. You may top up at a later time. However, the card is valid for 16 days only. It cannot be prolonged!
Travellers need to show one form of ID, a passport for example. It worked like a charm for me.

  4. Brian

Hi, I’m traveling alone (no parents or guardian or anyone picking me up) but I’m just shy of 20, will I still be able to get a card?

    1. gojiakhong

      Hello Brian,

      Thank you for your message.

Getting a prepaid simcard in Taiwan might be difficult for you to get due to their NCC law.
However, you can consider getting the pocket wifi instead.
Are you Singaporean? Maybe you can consider purchasing the StarHub prepaid simcard.

      Hope this helps.

  10. Gwendolyn

    Hi,

May I ask is that the coverage of FarEasTone in TaiChung very bad? As now I hard to make decision in which Telco service I should choose.

    Thank you.

    1. gojiakhong

      Hi, Gwendolyn.

      Thank you for your message.

Is it not bad actually. Just that if you are planning to go up the mountainous area the connection might not be so good.
Feel free to check the network coverage here.

You can consider Chunghwa Telecom to be safe, as they are the largest telecommunication service provider in Taiwan.

Hope this helps you in your trip to Taiwan~!
